colours is out on september 23rd in the eu and october 8th in north america! here are shows from now through the release. check back for more dates.
me, thom, phil, robin, and mike (with rich and neil in the background) playing ‘you can come home’ for southern souls. thanks mitch & tara!
i took this after a rehearsal — that’s phil, dan, and robin. if you add thom, you get the band bernice (also sometimes including colin fisher, felicity williams, kieran adams, or nico dann). i really love bernice and i really love the people in it. and they made our record so good, i can’t believe it! an early bernice moment that blew my mind was when thom and i were on tour in england, before we made the record, and we met up with robin in london, where she was studying. a week later, robin sang with us at a show and she and thom blew my mind with a vocal arrangement they had come up with (in, like, two seconds) for the end of ‘walking in the folly,’ which starts off the b side of colours. when we recorded it in toronto, i just couldn’t believe how gorgeous it was. sometimes i wish i lived in toronto so i could hang out with these guys and suck up some of their musical aliveness. til then, i content myself with listening to their music (and our music) over and over.
this is thom and me at 6 nassau, the studio in toronto where we recorded colours. the picture was probably taken by phil, whose drums were set up right across from us, and who brought a great camera to the session. mike (singing/songwriting) and dan (bass playing) were to our left. to our right was the control room where sandro (producing) and jeff (engineering) were pressing buttons and saying really helpful things at exactly the right times. when we weren’t sitting right there, we were listening to stuff with sandro and jeff, eating #19s at pho hung just down the block, having a drink at …oh dang, what was it called? … , or getting ourselves between those places. i walked so much that month, my left hip is still sore from it. who knew you could hurt yourself walking? i must be getting old. it was well worth it. when i was walking in toronto, i listened to the mixes a lot, and i also listened to marker starling’s last podcast for tin angel records. and george harrison’s all things must pass. and i spent a lot of time at the holy oak, watching great music. thank you, toronto!
happy summer, guys. i’m doing some tidying up here, pointing this site toward the release of the new record, colours. the artwork is finished and gorgeous, thanks to our friend anthony gerace. in anticipation of the release (sep/oct, depending on where you are), i’ll be posting lots of good stuff here, maybe even getting some other folks from the crew to chime in. thanks for stopping by.
